VESPA CELEBRATES ITS FIRST EIGHTY YEARS

EIGHTY YEARS OF AN ICON. EIGHTY YEARS OF STORIES.

April 23, 1946, marked the birth of a dream on two wheels, transforming it into a symbol of freedom, style, and optimism. Eight decades later, that intuition has become a collective narrative where the past meets the future in a continuous dialogue. Vespa was born in Pontedera from a courageous idea to get a post-war country moving again. Accessible and democratic, it was designed to be easy to ride and suitable for everyone, without exception. A project of universal mobility. It invented light urban mobility and gave meaning to female mobility, which until then had been limited and subordinate to others. Over the decades, Vespa became a cult object that entered the lives of those who ride it, representing an extension of their own style and way of being.

Vespa quickly conquered the worlds of cinema, music, art, photography, and fashion, entering the contemporary collective imagination. In eighty years, over 160 models have been born, all faithful to a precise identity. Today, Vespa is a timeless icon: its essential lines, purity of surfaces, and the balance between function and aesthetics have defined a symbol of Italian design capable of evolving without ever losing consistency.

Vespa has written indelible pages of art and social history. No other vehicle over the years has carried the signature of some of the most creative and brilliant minds in the world, such as Salvador Dalì in the summer of 1962, who created a Vespa bearing the name of his wife, "Gala," or more recently Giorgio Armani, who in 2015 reinterpreted the Vespa 946 with his signature tones and refinement. Next came the young American designer Sean Wotherspoon, who envisioned it as colorful as the street art that inspired his creations. He was followed by none other than the Maison Christian Dior, which under the creative direction of Maria Grazia Chiuri, dressed one of the most elegant and sought-after Vespa 946s ever made. In 2022, it was the flair of one of the world's most beloved pop legends, Justin Bieber, that gave life to a surprising "total-white" Vespa, which became an icon the very day it was unveiled. In 2025, two masters of contemporary art and design, Urs Fischer and Frank Gehry, created two incredible works of art: two Vespa Primavera handcrafted as unique pieces to support the noble cause of the Special Olympics alongside Vespa.

What other product, with wheels or without, can boast such a variety of illustrious creators? All are united by a single denominator: the Vespa, which, despite being interpreted by the genius of the artist, has always remained true to itself, strengthening its identity time and again. Today, we honor this legacy that continues to inspire cultures, trends, and people, letting ourselves be captured by Vespa's innate creativity, wherever it may lead us.

A universe of projects has been designed to honor the milestone, however partial, of these 80 years. From the new Vespa 80th, a refined tribute to its origins, to the apparel and accessories of the “80TH ANNIVERSARY” capsule that reflect Vespa’s philosophy and style, all crown a journey that, much like Vespa itself, defies the rules of time. Eighty years of stories from so many ordinary people, even if in the saddle of a Vespa, no one ever feels "ordinary." Eighty years of iconic shapes, adventures, and joie de vivre: this is the soul of Vespa, which refuses to be imprisoned by the past but instead, as it has always done, projects itself into the future. 

Rome, the Eternal City and "The Great Beauty", long held in the collective imagination as the symbolic home of La Dolce Vita, has been chosen as the natural and ideal destination to celebrate the eighty years of an icon that has reinvented itself over time to remain forever contemporary. Four days of festivities and events, from June 25 to 28, in what promises to be the grandest celebration in the history of a legend.
